Fire, Air, Water, Earth

Essex Voices presented a concert in aid of Great Waltham Church organ restoration. The programme reflected the ancient elements of fire, air, water and earth and contained a mixture of styles and periods of music. The first item got off to an unusual start with a Himalayan singing bowl as accompaniment in Closing the circle by Leanne Veitch which referenced all the elements. Madrigals, spirituals, part-songs and folksongs all made an appearance as well as a setting of the weather forecast to Anglican chant. The tour de force was de Wert's Ascendente Jesu, an extremely complex six-part motet depicting the gospel story of Jesus embarking a boat before a storm arose. The depiction in the music of the storm, the disciples' cries and the peace that returns as the storm subsides are difficult to bring off and were expertly handled in this performance. Short items for two recorders and continuo and for bass viol provided a chance to reflect on the texts, played by members of the group. A substantial sum was raised towards the appeal.
